David Shutts OBE, Director, CBI East Midlands
David Shutts left school at 16 to undertake a mechanical and production engineering apprenticeship with the Ministry of Defence.
Completing his time 4 years later he joined the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer Officer where he took his degree at the RN’s own engineering college in Plymouth.
He served 25 years in total at sea and on shore serving on every ship type from Frigate to Aircraft Carrier and was Chief Engineer of the Type 23 Frigate, HMS Westminster.
On shore he was the second in command of the brand new Trident submarine docking facility, the final arbiter of marine engineering excellence for the surface flotilla and a mentor and assessor of surface ship Chief Engineers.
In 2006 he was appointed to HMS Daring, the all-electric, high voltage, world’s most advanced warship as the Chief Engineer and Officer in Command for her final build and sea trials evaluation process. He was awarded an OBE in the Queens’ Birthday Honours List for his leadership in this role.
On leaving the Royal Navy in 2010 as a Commander, he worked in the shipping industry for Inchcape Shipping Services, a global company spanning 300 offices in 68 countries, where he was initially employed in government engagement before latterly as the Vice President for Global Sales.
David is a Chartered Marine Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He lives with his wife Jo and stepson Zachary in South Lincolnshire.
