CBI North East
The North East is defined by its industrial heritage which is being reinvented to create a hotbed of manufacturing innovation
The old shipyards have been redeveloped into manufacturing sites for offshore wind, the chemicals industry has been reinvigorated with innovations in industrial biotechnology - and through investment from Thailand, the region is preparing to export steel to the country. Sunderland Nissan has been declared the most productive UK car plant ever and is at the forefront of new technologies as it prepares for the manufacture of the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the opening of its new battery plant. The region's five excellent universities and its very strong colleges including the UK's largest, Newcastle College, ensure that as well as producing the industries for the future, we are creating the associated skills base.
