Meet the regional director
Steve Rankin has been the CBI's Thames Valley regional director since 2005. Prior to that, he was the regional director in the North East, a post he began in April 2002.
This followed more than 20 years working as a lobbyist outside the UK, mainly in Brussels, but also including two years in Washington DC and three in Paris. Steve ran lobbying consultancies in each of these locations. His time as in Brussels culminated in a position as EU government affairs director for Glaxo Welcome.
He first moved to Brussels in 1981 to run the CBI's office there. Before that he was the CBI's regional director in the West Midlands. In the mid-1980s, he was appointed director of membership in London, but left the CBI to return to Brussels to begin a new career on lobbying.
Steve was born in Cumbria. He went to school in Hexham, Northumberland, and to university in Oxford where he read Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
