(Senior) Policy Adviser

Role Summary:

Based at our London Cannon Street office, the CBI’s policy teams are responsible for developing and lobbying on the CBI policy position on a range of policy areas. This is in support of the CBI’s mission to help businesses of all sizes across the UK to make their full contribution to prosperity. These roles offer a unique opportunity to work across business and politics on the most pressing policy issues, during a crucial period for the UK economy.

Reporting into a Head of Group, as a Policy adviser you will enjoy a varied and intellectually stimulating range of work, working alongside and supporting teams of policy professionals. There will be engagement with senior business leaders to develop CBI policy and support key sectors of the economy, relationship building with government officials and politicians, and communication of CBI members’ views to a wide range of audiences on public platforms and through the media.

We are currently recruiting for roles in several policy teams. While we will consider all suitable candidates for different roles, if you have a specific interest or preference, please do indicate this in your application.

Key Responsibilities:

Policy Development

  • Research and analysis of public policy, leading the development of CBI policy positions.
  • Drafting of papers, policy briefs and CBI responses.
  • Supporting the policy team and Director as well as other CBI colleagues where required.

Communication & Lobbying

  • Influencing policy decisions by lobbying UK MPs, civil servants, regulators and EU institutions, including through building and maintaining your own network of political and government contacts.
  • Leading the developing compelling policy recommendations for reports and position papers, through research and problem solving.
  • Representing the CBI at conferences, external meetings and possibly through the media.

Interactions with members 

  • Discussion with CBI members both individually and at committee meetings, including by establishing networks of contacts and facilitating roundtable events.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with CBI members, sharing policy insight and analysis, both by developing proactive communication strategies and in a timely and professional manner.
  • Working with colleagues in the CBI’s commercial team to use this engagement, insight & intelligence to support the recruitment and retention of CBI members.

Project Working

  • Leading project work in support of team goals, including through appropriate use of planning tools and collaboration across different CBI functions such as commercial and communications.
  • Managing stakeholders in support of project success, ensuring necessary proactive sharing of information with internal and external audiences.

Knowledge & Experience

What an individual must know or understand to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements

  • Achieved or due to achieve a 2:1 at degree level or equivalent
  • Demonstrable interest in general public policy
  • Knowledge and understanding of UK and EU political institutions and the broad political landscape
  • Understanding of the workings of business and commercial pressures
