Senior Sector Adviser - Technology, Media and Telecomms

£35,000 to £42,500 per annum + benefits

Within the CBI’s sector team, is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join a group tasked with developing and driving the ambitious plans of the business. It will be your job to help deepen our membership base, with a specific focus on technology, media and telecoms (TMT) – supporting the Head of Sector Development in establishing and delivering a strategic TMT sector business plan to 2020 that grows the CBI’s presence in the sector.

The role will involve developing and demonstrating a sound grasp of the economic and political issues that matter to the sector in order to shape CBI activity, liaising with policy colleagues across the organisation to produce a compelling offering for the sector, and at times, undertaking some unique policy research and analysis. They will provide analysis of target organisations in order to underpin the TMT sector strategy, have account management responsibilities and where appropriate, lead targeted approaches of their own.

Key Responsibilities:

Developing and delivering a TMT sector business plan

  • Driving increased membership retention and satisfaction by working with the Head of Sector Development to delivering a compelling business plan for the TMT sector – based on research and analysis, policy, networking and intelligence.
  • Commercialise the CBI’s existing offer from across the business and successfully rolling it out to sector targets, developing bid materials specifically focused on TMT including new products, sales packs and briefings.
  • Tracking progress against the TMT sector business plan and reporting this to the governance team
  • Working with those developing sector plans in other parts of the business to share best practice.
  • Undertaking unique policy analysis and research where critical to recruitment in order to supplement the CBI’s existing offer.

Managing external relationships

  • Develop a strong understanding of the political and economic environment in the sector, becoming the ‘go-to’ expert on TMT within the CBI.
  • Use your understanding in order to manage the relationship with member companies in the sector to ensure that CBI supports their business to grow, as well as ensuring members are kept informed of CBI activities in areas of relevance, driving retention.
  • Writing tailored briefings, sales materials and bid documents for TMT organisations and internal teams, supporting both senior colleagues and your own recruitment activities.
  • Maintaining accurate database records of the CBI’s efforts in the TMT sector.
  • Representing the CBI at conferences, CBI regional meetings and internal and external events, as well as building a compelling programme of engagement with the sector, including running of a sector standing committee.
  • Coaching regional colleagues on the sector, including key issues, dynamics, business models and key players, prior to meetings they are planning.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Degree educated
  • Knowledge of and interest in business affairs, national and regional policy
  • Experience of writing sales or commercial documents
  • Experience working with external stakeholders
  • Strong knowledge of UK and EU issues in the TMT sector.
  • Numerically literate
  • Experience of account management and/or sales desirable

The successful candidate will be interested in business and current affairs and will have an excellent analytical ability to help them understand potential members and be able to put together targeted sales campaigns. They will be a confident communicator with an excellent business writing style.

They must be proactive, pragmatic and be able to meet tight deadlines while maintaining excellent attention to detail. They should have a flexible approach and enjoy working with other people. Experience of account management would be helpful, but not essential. Above all they should have a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, the ability to manage multiple projects/demands at times and the professionalism to be a credible representative for the CBI.
