From film and television, to advertising and marketing, the creative industries are one of the UK’s fastest growing sectors in terms of both job and value creation. Alongside their vital economic role, these industries help mould the UK’s global brand, shaping investment, tourism, and our cultural influence. The UK’s reputation as a leader in the creative industries means that we are in a formidable position to take advantage of international opportunities, and the CBI supports the sector to do just that. 

Top priorities

  • Industrial Strategy – The CBI welcomes the Government’s recognition for the creative industries in the Industrial Strategy Green Paper as one of the five sectors identified for an early sector deal, and we are working with our members and with government to shape a strategy that delivers the right domestic environment that attracts inward investment and drives the sector’s success overseas.
  • Developing global IP frameworks – Our work on intellectual property (IP) is focused on developing strong and stable IP frameworks at home and abroad to allow businesses to invest in, develop, and exploit brands and IP. In particular, we want government to put IP at the heart of future trade agreements, and to place more emphasis on support for developing IP frameworks in key markets, such as China and Brazil.
  • Securing access to talent – The UK is a leading global hub for the creative industries, and these businesses often rely in part on non-UK talent to enhance their overseas offering. We are focussed on ensuring that these companies can move staff around their international operations and that the UK is open to talent from around the world, particularly in the context of Brexit.

Policy issues affecting the industry

  • Digital single market – From access to connectivity and audio-visual content, to buying and selling more online, the digital single market offers many opportunities. We are working to ensure that creative businesses can take advantage of these, with market-led, workable solutions to implementation. As a world leading digital economy, the UK’s involvement in shaping the creation of the Digital Single Market remains as important as ever for the future of our relationship with the European Union.
  • Exports – Exports from the creative industries contribute a substantial amount to the UK economy: it accounts for 9.0% of all UK service exports, 57.3% of which goes to the EU. The future of trade is of critical importance to the sector and the CBI is working with businesses to make sure that the sector is prioritised in future trade deals, so that the UK’s creative industries can continue to make a positive economic and social impact on the world stage.
  • Skills shortage – Addressing the significant skills shortages faced by the creative industries is critical to the success of the sector. A thriving creative sector relies on access to the best digital and creative skills and the CBI is working with businesses to help spread this message to government, higher education institutions and the public.
  • Disruptive Innovation – With new technology offering increased efficiency and productivity, disruptive innovation is a vital topic across sectors. The creative industries are at the forefront of disruptive innovation, and the CBI is working with members and Government to ensure the UK becomes a hub for the next wave of disruptive innovation and cutting-edge technologies, and that together we achieve the right outcomes for our creative sectors post-Brexit.
  • Digital infrastructure – Alongside many other sectors the creative industries are heavily reliant on the UK’s digital infrastructure. The CBI works to maintain the UK’s position at the forefront of the digital revolution through support for continued investment in the UK’s fixed-line and mobile broadband networks.
  • Inclusive workplaces - Diversity is an issue across business, but in particular for some parts of the creative industries. We help businesses to unlock the benefits of inclusive workplaces - for the benefit of all - by bringing companies together to share learnings both within, but especially across different sectors.
