Investment intentions survey

The survey is conducted on a twice a year basis covering the European Commission NACE sectors of UK manufacturing industry

This survey is conducted exclusively for the European Commission in March and November and covers investment in the UK manufacturing and processing industries. The CBI took over the operation of conducting this survey from the Government Business Statistics Office (one of the forerunners of the Office for National Statistics) in 1987.

This survey sample is identical to the sample for the CBI Industrial Trends Survey. However, as this survey is an exclusive supply product, the stratification of the industry sectors reported on is different to the main manufacturing survey (Industrial Trends) and conforms to the European NACE Rev:2 standard industrial classification. The survey provides harmonized aggregated data for investment goods, intermediate goods, food and beverages, consumer goods, non-durable consumer goods, durable consumer goods and the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers. The CBI also provides, as part of the contracted supply detail at the individual industry level.

The survey is classified according to the official Standard Industrial Classification (SIC 2007) and the survey weights are now updated on an annual basis.

The survey asks for information on the purpose of investment - replacement of production capacity, extension of production capacity, rationalization and other aims (safety, pollution control etc) - and the proportion of investment undertaken during the current and past two years, as well as for next year. The survey also asks about factors that influence investment such as demand, financial resources or expected profits and technical factors.
