Step 1: measure your carbon footprint
Step 1: Measure your carbon footprint
Measurement of emissions is important to understanding where you
can make the most-effective reductions.
Keep things simple
Our motto here is: "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good". Producing a carbon footprint need not be an exhaustive process. You want an approximation that will serve the needs of your initial carbon reduction decisions. For most businesses, the full carbon footprint has three parts:
Focus on the parts of your footprint over which you have immediate control. This means the first and second box as the logical starting point.
Finding the information
The information needed to measure your footprint will come from the management system you establish within your business to keep track of your carbon emissions.
Generally speaking, heating fuel use and electricity consumption can be found on your energy bills-almost all energy providers now give you the option of viewing this information over the web.
Fuel use in company vehicles will require that you either keep track of fuel purchases (in litres), or keep track of kilometres driven and then divide this by the fuel efficiency of your fleet.
