An effective NHS is crucial to the economic prosperity of the country as businesses need a healthy and motivated workforce

Overview

The CBI supports an effective, tax-funded NHS, with services delivered free at the point of need. The NHS already achieves significant results in improving the nation's health. But we should not be complacent. In many areas, the system does not work in the best interests of the patient and its results don't compare well with similar health services in Europe. The NHS also faces new health challenges: obesity; an ageing population and expensive new treatments. This means managers and clinical staff need to rethink how they operate.

There must be better support for the adoption of innovative approaches in the NHS that brings care closer to the home or the community. Practical steps, building on the results of the current tele-health and tele-care pilot programmes, will help make the case for more care being administered closer to where patients live and work..

Our report Best of health shows that reform of the way primary care is delivered is essential to help more people with long-term conditions stay out of hospital and could create savings of up to £15bn. This requires an effective commissioning structure focused on delivering good patient outcomes.
