Welfare-to-work
Tough economic conditions mean extra effort is needed to help the long-term unemployed, those facing multiple disadvantages and those with poor basic skills secure sustained employment
Overview
Real improvements in the effectiveness of our welfare services requires a renewed focus on the outcome that really matters: more people in sustained employment. The CBI believes this can be achieved by harnessing the strengths of the public, private and voluntary sectors in a mixed market of provision and incentivising them to give people the best support by paying according to results.
The CBI advised the Department for Work and Pensions on the development of its commissioning strategy and the Work Programme, launched in 2011. This is the new approach to getting the long-term unemployed back into work in which private providers are playing a leading role and are rewarded based on their success in getting the long-term unemployed into work.
We are working closely with the department to help ensure this new market operates effectively and that there is a joined-up approach to tackling long-term unemployment, which encourages investment in the sorts of intensive training and support services needed to tackle worklessness.
