Business issues

Indirect taxes

These are handled by the Indirect Taxes Sub-Committee, which monitors developments in the indirect tax field and take appropriate action, where necessary

This is the main CBI forum for handling VAT domestically and in Europe. To achieve this we attend relevant HMT/HMRC forums as well as the Business Europe VAT Group.

Issues dealt with under this heading include:

  • OECD Internationalisation of VAT/sales taxes
  • Consumption tax on international services (VAT)
  • EU Commission VAT programme

The CBI has responded to HMRC's consutlation addressing borderline anomalies on VAT which include hot take-away food and “premises”.  Read our response here (pdf)
