Peak Scientific's Marketing Director Mark Flanagan tells us how a focus on safety, sustainability and innovation has turned a family firm into an award-winning industry leader.

Established in Scotland in 1997, Peak Scientific is a family owned business based in Inchinnan that has become a leading innovator in the design, manufacture and on-going support of high performance on-site gas generators for analytical laboratories.

With two decades of experience in pioneering reliable gas generator technology, developing market-leading nitrogen, hydrogen and zero air systems, mainly for the fields of Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Gas Chromatography (GC), we have focussed on three key areas, safety, sustainability and innovation to transform and drive growth in our business.

At Peak we champion the use of gas generators as a replacement for pressurised gas cylinders in laboratories, creating a safer work environment where gas is supplied in a safer and more convenient manner – all at the push of a button.

We also encourage laboratories to switch from using finite resource helium to using sustainable hydrogen gas. We do this by demonstrating laboratory processes where hydrogen outperforms helium and providing detailed guides for laboratories looking to make the switch.

In the current laboratory gas market, helium supply fluctuates regularly and laboratories suffer frequent price increases and occasional supply shortages.

Hydrogen gas generators on the other hand offer a more reliable and sustainable gas supply for our customers.

We prioritise innovation at Peak and are always looking for new ways to make on-site gas generation more accessible for all laboratories.

To achieve this, we recently introduced a monthly gas subscription model, similar to the model used for pressurised gas cylinders, allowing laboratories to continue to rent their gas monthly but have it supplied via an on-site gas generator instead of cylinders.

This allows laboratories to benefit from a higher-quality, safer and more efficient gas supply without needing to revise their budgets to purchase a gas generator.

Our focus on the three core areas of safety, suitability, and innovation has had a clear impact on our success. Since 2010 Peak has tripled its staff count and opened 18 new offices, now employing more than 400 staff in offices on every continent. We have also been recognised with a record six Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, five of these for International Trade and one for Innovation.

These unique accolades, the highest in British industry, are awarded by Royal approval and provide the added encouragement we need to press ahead with our mission of bringing safe and convenient gas supplies to laboratories all over the world.
