Making environmental taxes work for business

Environmental taxes have the potential to play an important role in unlocking business investment, which is needed to drive private sector growth and tackle environmental impacts. This is the headline message from the CBI’s research for this report, based on over 100 hours of one-to-one interviews with over 70 member companies operating in the UK. But interviewees are equally clear that this will only happen if these taxes are well designed and correctly administered.

With the coalition government committed to increasing the proportion of revenue raised by environmental taxes in the coming years, this report provides a stocktake by the business community of the current landscape – looking at what taxes are and aren’t working for business – as well as a view on how the system can be improved in the future.
