The economic impact of the Japanese earthquake
The cost to Japan of the disaster has been tentatively estimated at up to 4% of GDP. Economic activity in the affected areas will be severely curtailed, but the effects are being felt more widely as a result of power shortages. Japanese growth is expected to decline in the near term but to be augmented by reconstruction spending in the latter half of 2011. The impact on global growth is expected to be relatively modest, but conditions in financial markets have been volatile.
