    What is the JBC?

In 1991, CBI Northern Ireland joined with the Irish Business and Employers' Confederation to form the IBEC/CBI Joint Business Council.

    Mission statement

To develop and sustain business co-operation within the island of Ireland and to advance international competitiveness.

    Achievements

Between 1991 and 2000 over 5,000 company representatives were aided by the Council, at some 300 buyer-supplier and networking meetings across regions and sectors organised as part of the IBEC/CBI Trade and Business Development Programme.

Trade between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland has doubled in the past 10 years, with a 12.6% increase per annum from North to South and a 7.4% increase per annum from South to North.

In 2000 the IBEC/CBI Joint Business Council established a new strategic focus aimed at assisting companies throughout the island of Ireland to develop international competitiveness by:
    • Articulating business needs, barriers and opportunities to increase trade on and off the island
    • Improving the business environment in transportation, telecommunications, energy and environment
    • Developing business innovation and improved further education – business linkages.
The IBEC/CBI Joint Business Council works in close partnership with InterTrade Ireland and is supported by the Special EU Programmes Body.
