Living with Minerals 3

The CBI's Living with Minerals 3 Conference, took place on 3 November 2008 at the QEII Conference Centre in central London.

Attended by nearly 400 delegates, the conference was a great success and we wish to acknowledge the generous financial support of the 15 sponsors.

Chaired by CBI Minerals Group chairman, Nigel Jackson, the conference heard from four guest speakers - CBI deputy director-general John Cridland, who briefed the conference on the current state of the economy and gave his full support to the work of the Minerals Group.
Robert Flies, DG Environment EU Commission, spoke about the role of the EU in promoting access to raw materials.
Natural England chief executive Helen Phillips, highlighted the achievements of the industry in meeting biodiversity targets and stressed the work of the industry alone will enable the UK to meet its Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) target.
Aubrey Manning, emeritus professor of Natural History, University of Edinburgh gave a stimulating and learned view on the importance of adopting a truly sustainable approach to mineral supply.

The UK Minerals Forum working groups convenors then reported on the work of their groups over the last two years:
  • Declining mineral reserves and future security of supply

  • Convenor – Andrew Bloodworth, British geological Survey
  • Mineral extraction in National parks and AONBs
Convenor – Ruth Chambers, Campaign for National Parks
  • Carbon and proximity of mineral supply

  • Convenor – Lester Hicks CBE MA MCD
  • Cumulative impact of policy, legislation and regulation

  • Convenor – Simon van der Byl, Quarry Products Association

TV personality, Michael Rodd, facilitated a lively discussion and innovative interactive voting session after each group presentation the results of which, together with each convenors presentation can be viewed by clicking on the attached link.

The UK Minerals Forum will analyse outcomes from the discussion and use it to develop its programme of work for the next two years.

The event concluded with Dyfrig James - regional president Northern & Central Europe Lafarge Aggregate & Concrete, concluding remarks.

Delegates used the opportunity to network at the exhibition held in conjunction with the conference and at the close of proceedings, delegates made their way to the House of Commons to attend a reception hosted by Stephen O'Brien MP, Associate Parliamentary Minerals Group chairman.
