Human resourcesThe CBI Human Resources Policy Directorate lobbies the UK government and international institutions on a range of employment and employee relations issues. Through regular committees, working groups and written consultations, CBI member companies gain advance notification of forthcoming developments and have a direct impact on the lobbying process. The directorate is also a vital source of expert advice and information on a range of HR and employment issues through regular newsletters, surveys, research reports, access to specialised policy advisors, networking events and benchmarking activities. What we doEmploymentEquality Learning & skills Pensions EmploymentEmployment and employee relations are vital issues for the CBI. Ensuring a flexible labour market and a productive workforce are priorities for business. The CBI’s work on employment covers a number of areas and involves work at UK and EU level – an increasing number of UK regulations are the result of EU Directives.Particular areas covered include trade union recognition and non-union employee involvement (at UK and EU level); working time arrangements; pay and restructuring. EqualityThe CBI is active in influencing discrimination legislation and promoting good equality practices. We want to see equality laws which protect employees and add value to business, both at a UK and European level.Current issues include the Discrimination Law Review and the government’s plans for a Single Equality Act; age regulations and work on ethnic minority employment. Learning & skillsImproving skills at all levels is a priority for UK business in order to remain competitive in an increasingly global and rapidly changing economy. The CBI believes that employers, individuals and government all have a role to play. The CBI’s priorities are for the government to ensure that far more young people get a good initial education and have the skills and qualities needed for work, while working with employers to build on the workforce training they already provide. The CBI is lobbying for higher quality publicly funded training, with more flexible workplace qualifications and funding that is responsive to customers’ needs. Our work on the Leitch Review of future skills needs is central to this. PensionsAs the cost and risk of occupational pension provision continues to rise, more and more companies are being forced to close final salary schemes or take other action to reduce costs. Consequently many employers are exploring ways to get better value from the pensions they do provide. The CBI is one of the key actors in UK pensions policy, working closely with the UK government to ensure that the business and regulatory environment is favourable for those companies which voluntarily choose to provide occupational pensions. The CBI aims to ensure that the business voice is at the heart of the current debate on the future of UK pensions. The CBI is lobbying hard on a range of pensions issues, including the Pensions Protection Fund and new scheme funding requirements. |
