Get involvedAs a CBI member, how can you get involved? All members have the opportunity to influence policies that affect the formulation of environmental regulation at the highest level of government. Influencing policy, CBI is currently lobbying on several key issues, some of which have been ongoing for several years and others which are currently moving up the political agenda:· The Industrial Emissions Directive recast · The draft Soil Framework Directive · The Modernisation of Landfill Tax · Landfill Bans · Guidelines on the Definition of Waste · Fairer and Better Environmental Enforcement · A possible Emissions Trading Scheme for NOx and SO2 · The recasts of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive and the Regulation of Hazardous Substances Directive Joining a committee or working groupThe Environmental Affairs Committee meets quarterly to set the CBI’s direction on environmental regulation. At present membership is drawn from a diverse range of sectors including automotive, water, retail, manufacturing, waste management, construction and pharmaceutical. We are currently reviewing its membership with a view to increasing the number of members invited to meetings as well as increasing the numbers of currently under-represented sectors (particularly power, waste management and retail).CBI is planning to do more proactive work on energy from waste this year and member input will be central to this, both in terms of technological expertise and on the ground experience of current waste regulation. We are keen to engage with members who are involved in on-site generation and waste management firms who have encountered difficulties when applying for planning permission. An ad-hoc working group on the issue of energy from waste will be set up in the spring, which will give members the opportunity to engage directly with CBI on this issue. If interested please get in touch with Harry Cooper. Playing a part in a virtual networkAs well as the Committee there are several other virtual groups of members which include:· Environmental Affairs Committee (papers only): This is for members who do not want to attend the meetings themselves but would like to receive the minutes and the papers discussed. · Environmental Regulation Update: This update is designed to keep members engaged with the work CBI is doing in this policy area and help steer CBI work on this policy area. It requests member input on government consultations and policy work in general. The January update is attached to this email. · Issue-based Contact Lists: These lists are focused on specific issues such as waste, air, soil, water, WEEE, chemicals and regulation. Joining this list allows a member to be consulted directly on any policy relating to a specific area. If you are interested in joining one of these virtual groups, please get in touch with Harry Cooper. Signing up to Sustainability UpdateThis update lets members know the work that CBI is doing on climate change, environment and planning issues. This differs from the environmental regulation update which asks members for direct input on specific regulatory issues. If you work for a CBI member company and would like to receive the update, email Sham Begum.
