CBI Industrial Trends Survey – full results The UK's longest-running business survey With a formidable 46-year reputation for timeliness and accuracy, the Industrial Trends Survey of UK manufacturing is regularly used by policy makers at the Treasury and the Bank of England, the business community, academics and top analysts in financial markets. It is the longest-running private sector indicator of UK manufacturing trends. Quarterly surveys The quarterly survey – conducted in January, April, July and October – gives expert qualitative opinion from senior manufacturing executives, on past and expected trends in output, exports, prices, costs; investment intentions, business confidence and capacity utilisation. Key strengths: Released within ten days and prior to official statistics Indicates recent trends and short term expectations Based on consistent and valuable subjective business opinion Publishes data not covered by official sources Never revised, unlike official data Detailed data covers: Total UK manufacturing Small, medium and large companies 12 broad industry groups 50 individual industries Scotland and Wales The importance of this survey work is reflected in the CBI's regular supply of data to the European Commission's harmonised business survey of EU countries. The CBI acknowledges the EU's financial support for the technical development and supply of this data, which is published in harmonised form in The European Economy Journal. All participants in this survey receive a free summary of results for their sector. Surveys are published each month and a quarterly analysis is also published.
