Africa post-Gleneagles: threats and opportunities

The West must start to fulfil its promises to tackle poverty in Africa and business must recognise its vested interest in helping the continent develop, Niall FitzGerald, chairman of Reuters, said at the inaugural CBI New Year Lecture. Mr FitzGerald, speaking to business leaders in London including Sir Bob Geldof, said the time has come for the G8 and other countries to 'translate alluring promises' on debt, development and aid into action. The promises were made at the Gleneagles G8 summit in 2005, but after the failure of the Hong Kong trade negotiations the time has come for 'a commitment to walk the talk on trade liberalisation, and for courage to reject compromises that protect few and impoverish many.'

Former CBI Director-General Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham addressed the Charities Aid Foundation's inaugural Sir Paul Getty KBE lecture on 6 January 2006. Business is willing to go further in supporting charitable concerns, he said, but this can only happen if charities make themselves more approachable, and if Government provides the right climate.
