Latest economic facts on Northern Ireland


Key statistics released this month include:

  • Employment figures show modest growth – for the period Jan-March 08 there were 787,000 people in employment, 0.4% higher than previous quarter and the year. A rise in unemployment was also reported to 4.6% (from 4.2% in previous quarter) though the claimant count only rose by 400 over the previous quarter to 24.500.
  • Construction falls - for the final quarter of 2007 the seasonally adjusted Index of Construction was 98.6, down 0.7 points on the previous quarter (99.3) and down 4.4 points on the corresponding quarter in 2006.
  • The CBI/Experian Regional Trends Survey for May indicated that orders and output for manufacturing in the last three months improved though business confidence and sentiment regarding exports deteriorated sharply with falling investment intentions. Unit costs continued to rise sharply.
