#CBIGlobalGrowth Blog: making the most of Government support

4500 businesses in the North East export. The Department for International Trade exists to ensure that these businesses can expand and access new overseas markets, as well as helping companies get into exporting for the first time.

There is huge value in doing so. Exporting offers companies a range of benefits, from improved financial performance and higher margins to insulation from the peaks and troughs of the UK economy.

That’s why 85% of companies state that exporting has led to levels of growth not otherwise possible, as well as being 11% more likely to survive if trading overseas.

But, despite these benefits, companies can are not always willing to move into trade. Some lack the resource, knowledge and finance. Others are put off by the perceived hassle of finding customers, navigating different legal and financial frameworks, or are simply too busy prioritising the UK market.

DIT offers companies the practical support to get into exporting, as well as the providing them with potential market opportunities to get started. Examples of the support open to businesses include:

  • The Overseas Market Introduction Service – DIT’s network to help firms find customers overseas by arranging introductions to potential overseas buyers, agents and distributors
  • The Tradeshow Access Programme, with 170 upcoming events to get involved in
  • Access to live opportunities to tender for goods and services, with 1501 existing opportunities
  • Northern Powerhouse Trade Missions, tailored to the needs of businesses and sectors across the North East
  • A new pilot scheme to offer match funding of £3500 to companies whose turnover is currently less than 30%
  • Funding of up to £2000 via the North East LEP for flights, overseas accommodation, advice and support
