The CBI Scotland take on the Flexible Workforce Development Fund

Hugh Aitken, CBI Scotland Director commented on the Scottish Government's announcment on the Flexible Workforce Development Fund.

Hugh Aitken, CBI Scotland Director, said:

“The Flexible Workforce Development Fund puts businesses in the driving seat by supporting whatever training investment is most appropriate to them, rather than government deciding, which has been the case too often in the past. This is a real step forward in supporting businesses to upskill and reskill staff to meet the needs of a modern economy, but the fund itself is small by comparison to the challenge we face. Business will welcome the initial focus on improving business capacity and productivity – and business choice on the types of training pursued something we would like to see replicated in other parts of the UK.  

“However, setting a blanket £10k cap per employer will prohibit firms from offering the type of high quality training opportunities the fund should be designed to support. For this fund to be a success and provide businesses with real help in tackling skills gaps we need to see a greater portion of levy funds allocated to it in the future.”
