"The sharing and gig economy have created new ways for millions of people to work"

Sharing Economy UK has responded to reported proposals for labour market reforms by John McDonnell at the TUC Conference.

Richard Laughton, Chair of Sharing Economy UK and CEO of easyCar, said:

"The sharing and gig economy have created new ways for millions of people to work across the UK. People really value the flexibility, economic freedom and independence it brings. It’s right that the industry and policymakers work together to make sure our labour market is flexible, fair and fit for purpose while giving individuals more security. Businesses are already taking steps to give benefits and similar workers’ rights to participants, but this is a new industry and this is a conversation that must continue.

“To deliver our country’s vision of becoming an ‘innovation nation’, making the sharing and gig economy work well has to be front and centre.”
