Commuting beyond the coronavirus

The pandemic has forced changes of an unprecedented scale in both the way we work and the way we travel. As the country adjusts to a new normal, with the return of schools and office workers, there is clear agreement across industry, government and the public that this is also an opportunity to transform transport behaviours and invest in commuting networks that deliver on emissions reduction.

From reduced congestion to improved air quality, building back better will mean ensuring the best practices of mass active travel and shared mobility uptake adopted during the crisis are sustained, coupled with a clear trajectory for the use of public transport. Transport connectivity will remain an important driver of productivity and prosperity. This element of choice therefore cannot be confined to city postcodes: it must be accessible across rural and remote localities too. This is one of the challenges the CBI will be
