Zurich is in the process of reskilling two-thirds of its UK workforce as it embraces the benefits of automation. As part of this, it launched a Data Science Apprenticeship – so what has it learnt in the process?

Retention in the data industry is a challenge, let alone attracting and retaining a diverse mix of candidates to the roles, particularly when working in insurance and outside of London. We realised that finding a way to build skills internally and provide career progression to our staff was key to building a sustainable pipeline of talent. We have, therefore, invested in being the first in the financial services industry to create a Data Academy, using the apprenticeship levy to equip our staff with skills for the future as part of our commitment to becoming a data confident organisation.
