Overview
Anthony Gruppo (CEO, Marsh Commercial)
- There are common behaviours amongst effective leaders, and chief amongst these is humility and the recognition that they can’t do everything single-handedly
- When thinking about allocating resources, its vital to think about what you’re looking to achieve, and how you’ll measure the outcomes. Its vital to consider all aspects of what success looks like for you and your organisation
- The workplace has shifted, and effective leaders take more than their fair share of the blame for setbacks, and less then their share of credit for successes
- The essence of motivation is getting people to care. Money can only take you so far if your team don’t have passion. You need to establish this as a central tenet of an organisation, and it can’t be tinkered with or bolted on later
- Effective leaders instil a sense of dignity in their teams, regardless of their function or role
- Technology is an effective enabler of development, but it needs to receive buy-in from your whole team. If they don’t feel as if its of benefit to them, the benefits of technology won’t materialise.
Rich Bishop (CEO, Orchis Ltd)
- The best business leaders are those who engage with teams and listen to what they have to say. Expertise and knowledge need to come from all ends of the business
- Be honest and open with your teams. We have to be able to make mistakes and learn from them, rather than double-down and repeat them
- Lockdowns have demonstrated that more than ever there is a human element to leadership. Home working was originally met with cynicism, but staff have for the most part demonstrated their ability to achieve and not lose productivity
- Trust is a key component of an effective leader. If your teams feel empowered to delivery core objectives, rather than superficial metrics, they will perform for you and your business
- Always consider what it is you want to achieve before making a decision and acting. Knowing the desired outcome or endpoint, allows you to take all of your team with you
