With news of Nando’s chicken shortage hitting the headlines, CBI members have been telling us that labour and skills shortages are biting across the whole economy. From construction and manufacturing to retail and hospitality, multiple sectors are feeling the effects. On top of this, a shortage of drivers in the logistics sector is disrupting supply chains across the country.
As a result, businesses tell us they’re having to reduce operating hours, limit supply, and are seeing a squeeze on profit margins. That’s why the CBI have called on the government to act.
Because the UK is experiencing both long and short-term pressures on the labour market, the CBI believes a range of interventions are needed to fix the problem and help firms access the people and skills they need. So far, the CBI has called for:
- Temporary access to visas for shortage roles
- Immediately updating the Shortage Occupations List by accepting the Migration
