Updated Job Support Scheme and additional cash grants

On 22 October the Chancellor announced a new business support package to help businesses struggling as a result of COVID-19. The government will significantly increase the generosity of its Job Support Scheme for businesses facing reduced demand (JSS Open) and introduce additional grants for businesses in the hospitality, accommodation and leisure sector who may be adversely impacted by the restrictions in high-alert level areas (tier 2 local lockdown). The CBI has campaigned for financial support for businesses to match new restrictions under the three-tier system of local restrictions. This updated Job Support Scheme will do more to protect jobs and livelihoods.

The key updates to the Job Support Scheme (JSS Open) mean that open businesses facing suppressed demand will be given extra help to keep staff on as the government significantly increases their contribution to wage costs, and lowers employers’ contributions.
