The UK government has stated its ambition to be net-zero by 2050. To make this goal a reality and underpin a sustainable economic recovery, we believe that hydrogen is essential for the decarbonisation of industry, transport, heat and power, says Mike Lockett, Uniper UK Country Chairman and Chief Commercial Officer Power.
Why hydrogen?
New solutions are needed that will help reduce emissions rapidly, particularly for those areas of the economy that are still dependent on high-carbon emitting fuels, e.g. heavy-duty transport, industry and heating our homes. Hydrogen can provide the answer and ‘green’ production from renewable energy sources is carbon-free. More conventional hydrogen production methods can be made carbon-neutral with the addition of carbon capture and storage technologies. The other benefit of hydrogen is that it can be refined into renewable liquid fuels, such as synthetic diesel and aircraft fuel, providing a clean energy source for those hard-to-decarbonise sectors of the economy.
