In Monday’s press conference, the Prime Minister confirmed that the Government’s four tests have been met. As per the Government’s initial Spring Roadmap, published in February, these tests are:
- Continued successful deployment of the vaccine programme
- Evidence of reductions in hospitalisations and deaths in those vaccinated
- No evidence of infections putting the NHS under unsustainable pressure; and
- The assessment of the risks remaining fundamentally unchanged by the emergence of new variants.
This means that from next Monday non-essential retail, gyms, hairdressers and pubs and restaurants able to serve food and drinks outside will be allowed to re-open in England. With health policy devolved, however, restrictions will be lifted at different paces in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
