We are looking for an economist to join our Economic Intelligence team on a six month fixed term contract, to help shape our views on UK and international macroeconomic trends and feed into CBI policy development. Based at our London offices at Cannon Place, the team also plays a key role in bringing economic rigour to CBI policy development.
The successful candidate would be working alongside other economists, data analysts and policy advisors, both within the CBI’s economics directorate and across the organisation. A key part of the job will involve engagement with senior business leaders, government officials, and the media.
Areas of responsibility
- Undertaking economic analysis to help develop the CBI’s policy positions.
- Commentary on UK and international economic developments.
- Contributing to the CBI's bi-annual economic forecast.
- Assisting in the analysis and interpretation of the CBI's business surveys.
- Data analysis, research, and input to reports on economic issues.
- Presenting the CBI’s views on macroeconomic trends to business, government and the media.
Knowledge and experience
What an individual must know or understand to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements.
- Degree or higher in an economics discipline or a related field.
- Minimum of two years’ experience as an economist.
- Excellent working knowledge of MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
- Demonstrable knowledge of macroeconomic indicators and fiscal accounts.
- Ability to work with a range of stakeholders to build support for economic policies.
- Ability to explain economics to a business audience through both presentations and written work.
- Ability to conduct cost/benefit analysis of tax and fiscal policy.
- Experience engaging with senior business leaders, government officials, and the media.
- Experience with econometric software.
- The practical actions required in order to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
- The ability to convey complex economic concepts to non-experts.
- Able to carry out accurate data analysis, and put together well researched and clearly written economic reports.
- Demonstrating the ability to think logically and to apply economic principles to analytical work or when responding to a policy problem.
