Javier was born in Barcelona, Spain where he attended school and university. He graduated from ESADE Business School (MBA) and holds an Economics Degree from the University of Barcelona. He then moved to Paris where he attended HEC and his first job was in market research at Aluminium Pechiney.
Subsequently, Javier joined Lloyds Bank International, working in Spain and then in the United States, where he was exposed to both Latin America and project finance, aircraft finance, leveraged buyout loans and structure finance.
In 1985, he joined Martini and Rossi as general manager for Portugal, where he had his first contact with the Scotch Whiskey Industry as importer and distributor of William Lawson’s. In 1987, he moved to the UK as General Manager with the additional responsibility of overseeing the Scotch whiskey interest of the group. While he was there, he set up a joint venture between Bacardi, Martini and Bass Brewers for distributing spirits. Following the acquisition of Martini by Bacardi at the end of 1993, Javier became president of Europe, Africa and the Middle East till 2002 and was based in Amsterdam. He became President and Chief Executive Officer of the Group based in Bermuda 2003-2004.
In 2005, Javier joined as a partner of Lion Capital, a new private equity firm focused on brands in the consumer and retail space. Past investments include: Orangina Schweppes, Weetabix, Kettle, Jimmy Choo, Picard, amongst others. Javier retired from Lion earlier this year.
Javier has done non-executive work for a number of years and he is a past director of SABMiller, Associated British foods, in the Scotch Whiskey Industry he was Vice-Chairman of William Grants and Sons from 2005-2014 and he also served on the board of the 1887 company. He is currently on the board of Coca-Cola European Partners, International consolidated Airlines Group and on 1st January 2017 he became Chairman of Diageo PLC.
