Member Consultation on SME Tax Policy

SME businesses make vital contributions to the UK economy, providing employment and training, funding private investment and driving innovation. They also play a vital role in funding the nation’s infrastructure and public services via their tax contributions.

However the tax burden on UK business is set to rise substantially, with:

  • Increases to corporation tax, and employer national insurance contributions
  • The reduction of the annual investment allowance
  • The end of the super-deduction, reliefs for business rates and reliefs for VAT, all expected by April 2023.

The tax compliance landscape is also increasingly difficult and complex for SMEs to navigate. Government can and should do more to support SMEs, through public investment and policy, to help them to support growth.

The CBI’s SME members are invited to attend this exclusive online event with our Tax policy team to share views on the tax issues and policies impacting their business. The aim of this event is to establish what support SMEs need to allow them to continue to grow and support the UK economy, and how the CBI can amplify these messages to government.

Join us to discuss key tax issues for SMEs, including how government can:

  • Support SME capital investment and innovation – for example, through capital allowances and R&D tax credits
  • Support SMEs to provide employment and training – for example through employer NICs and the apprenticeship levy
  • Simplify the compliance burden on SMEs, including through digitalisation
  • Support SMEs – including low-profit businesses – to prepare for the corporation tax rate rise and transitional rates from 2023.
