Shape the future of the apprenticeship levy and digital skills

Are you interested in helping to shape the future of the apprenticeship levy? What support do you need to help invest in digital skills? Join our CBI Member Consultation - Shape the future of the apprenticeship levy to share your views on how it can be reformed to help firms invest in the training and skills they need to thrive and grow in today’s economy.

Most levy-paying businesses tell us that they are only able to spend a fraction of their levy, and that their unspent funds could be used to pay for other training needs like digital skills and modular upskilling.

Ahead of the Autumn Budget, the government announced that it will consider whether the current tax system, including the operation of the Apprenticeship Levy, is doing enough to incentivise businesses to invest in the right kinds of training. To help make the case for change, we’re looking to hear from members to understand the barriers that prevent business investment in training – particularly for in demand skills, such as digital - as well as how the levy could be reformed to encourage higher levels of investment in skills.

With the Autumn Budget likely to be the last major fiscal event before the next general election, this is a key opportunity for businesses to shape reform.

During the event members will have the opportunity to feedback on the CBI’s policy ideas for apprenticeship levy reform, as well as discussing the following questions:

  • Have the CBI identified the right problems with the apprenticeship levy, and will our policy recommendations make it easier for businesses to invest in skills?
  • If the government reforms the apprenticeship levy, how would it change the way you invest in skills? What training would you spend levy funds on that you couldn’t before?
  • What are the barriers to your business investing in digitally upskilling your staff, and what role can government interventions/policy play?
