Vivian Hunt, the Managing Partner of McKinsey & Company in the UK and Chair of the CBI London Council, recently attended the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s new Business Advisory Board.

The primary role of the board is to work with, and advise, the Mayor on how best to maximise the competitiveness of London’s economy and promote London around the world.

The Mayor has assembled a diverse group of business leaders and entrepreneurs, reflecting the range of business activity in the capital.

Ten out of the sixteen board members are women and five board members are from a black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) background. In addition, strong representation from London’s booming tech sector indicates a forward-looking approach. Other CBI members in the group include Facebook, Virgin Money and the London Stock Exchange Group.

The Business Advisory Board met for the first time on 11 January.  Sadiq Khan and his Deputy Mayor of Business, Rajesh Agrawal, set out their economic priorities.  The key themes the group agreed to focus on are: digital skills; economic fairness; support for start-ups and scale-ups; and international promotion of London.

It was clear from the tone of the meeting that there is significant overlap between these themes and the agenda of the CBI in London.

While the CBI continues to strengthen its high-level collaboration with City Hall, Vivian's participation on the Mayor’s board will also help to ensure that the CBI’s views are well represented.

At this critical moment for London, it is imperative businesses have the resilience and agility to deal with the challenges presented by Brexit, and to capitalise on significant new economic opportunities.

London is one of the best, well-connected places to start and build a business, and we want to ensure it retains its position as the most open and competitive city in the world.

The next meeting of the Business Advisory Board is in April.
