CBI NI welcomes Planning Appeals Commission interconnector submission

Angela McGowan, CBI Northern Ireland Regional Director, commented:

“This is an important step forward in the delivery of this economically vital project which will not just ensure the security of our electricity supply for years to come, but will also drive down energy prices for everyone.

"Ultimately the North-South Interconnector will act as a key component for improving the overall competitive position of firms across Northern Ireland. An array of sectors ranging from manufacturing and hospitality, right through to education and health, will all feel the benefit of this critical piece of infrastructure.

"The 2016 CBI/AECOM Infrastructure Survey reported that 87% of Northern Ireland businesses identified the delivery of the interconnector as a top priority for the regional economy. However, with little progress over the last 12 months it is not surprising that the 2017 Infrastructure Survey found that 70% of local businesses surveyed were dissatisfied with the current state of regional infrastructure.

"Approval of the North South Interconnector is a great opportunity for policy makers to make good on the local infrastructure offering to both business and households. Businesses fully support the interconnector being constructed, as proposed, without any further delay.

“The CBI therefore calls on the Department for Infrastructure to reach a final positive decision on the interconnector application as soon as possible.”
