Scaling up Britain's MSBs

The CBI’s 2015 MSB summit hears keynote speeches from Carolyn Fairbairn and Angela Eagle, as a new report reveals medium sized businesses made the difference between recovery and recession.

Scaling up Britain's MSBs

The CBI’s second annual MSB summit, in partnership with Lloyds Bank, drew together over 175 leaders of medium sized businesses for a day filled with inspirational speakers and insightful workshops.

The focus of the summit was Scaling-up the midmarket and featured the launch of Life in the fast lane, a new report revealing that fast-growth MSBs have made the difference between recovery and recession in recent years.

In her first keynote speech as CBI director-general, Carolyn Fairbairn heralded the collective impact of the UK’s 3000 scale-up MSBs that contributed £59 billion to the UK economy between 2010 and 2013.  The report, produced following analysis provided by Experian, identified 6 key factors to help more businesses achieve their scale-up ambitions and showed that 7 in 10 fast-growth MSBs are found outside the capital, underlining their potential to power growth across the UK.

Key addresses from Lloyds Bank CEO António Horta Osório and shadow business secretary Angela Eagle MP championed the importance of MSBs to the economy and their integral link to future prosperity. Elsewhere, practical panel sessions led by speakers including CEO of SwiftKey Jon Reynolds, and co-founder of Coffee Republic Sahar Hashemi gave attendees the inside track on managing rapid growth.

Business leaders also attended specialised workshops on global economic trends, accessing growth capital and unlocking digital capabilities within their business. The CBI’s Global Growth Conference (March 22nd, Bristol) in partnership with UKTI, is the next major event on the MSB calendar.
