After the turbulence that dominated the global scene in the first half of 2025, the summer has given many firms valuable breathing space to take stock and prepare for the months ahead. But the wheels of policy never stop turning, so over the summer months the CBI has been working hard on parliamentary inquiries, our Budget submission and planning for the changes autumn could bring.
Policy and advocacy
We have been working on responses to two key parliamentary inquiries: the Business and Trade Select Committee's inquiry into UK trade policy and the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee's inquiry into a potential UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement. For both, our evidence sets out what business needs for a competitive and predictable trading environment. Both interventions will reinforce the business voice on the importance of maintaining open and reliable international markets - particularly given the geopolitical instability we have seen in recent months.
Separately, we have been using this time to refine our trade and international policy priorities for the CBI's Budget submission. With the Chancellor facing a tough fiscal environment, we have been working on asks which will boost the confidence of businesses to trade internationally and subsequently drive economic growth.
Looking ahead
We are continuing to support members in navigating developments in the US, where evolving trade policies remain one of the top concerns for UK firms. As we approach autumn, do get in touch to share your views, concerns and experiences on how your organisation has been impacted by these developments.
As the summer ends, our focus will now turn to delivery: advancing member priorities with the government, leading high-impact international engagements - such as COP30 - and welcoming overseas delegations, always ensuring CBI members are at the forefront of global trade discussions.
Whether the EU-UK relationship, developments in the US, or views on markets further afield, get in touch to share your thoughts.
