The CBI fully endorses the relentless focus and importance the government places on driving economic growth. After more than a decade of lost productivity, and complex challenges that neither business nor government can solve alone, we have reached a critical juncture. A new partnership for prosperity is required: government and business working together to build a stronger economy that lifts communities, improves living standards and realises the potential of all parts of the UK.
Innovation and technology adoption will be at the heart of any successful new growth story, and AI now plays a pivotal role in this vision. The government has listened to businesses and acknowledged the need for bold decisions and decisive action to reverse the trends in investment, productivity, and growth. We welcome the government's recognition that AI presents transformative opportunities across all sectors of the economy. However, to fully harness these opportunities, it is essential to establish clear, balanced, and future-proof regulations that provide certainty for businesses and support investment across sectors, while protecting the rights of creators.
Following consultation with members, including through the AI and Data working group, the CBI responded to the government’s consultation on plans for AI and copyright. The submission does not put forward a consensus view but seeks to inform Government decision-making by setting out where there are shared ambitions and support, drawing out where there are different views across industry, and pointing to a set of key principles that should underpin any solution.
