What you need to know
The fit note policy is changing from 1 July 2022 – adding on new health professionals now able to issue fit notes.
This change is a step in streamlining the process for businesses to authorise sickness absences and reduce the pressure on GPs – extending fit note authorisation to:
- registered nurses (including mental health)
- pharmacists
- occupational therapists
- physiotherapists
Digital signatures are here to stay – speeding the process for many health practices.
From 6 April 2022, GPs were permitted to provide electronic signatures to authorise sick notes.
Doctors can no issue and ceritfy fit notes digitally – no longer being required to print and physically sign fit notes to authenticate them.
Electronic signatures will also be available to the eligible health professionals from 1 July 2022.
