Ambitious announcements on R&D and Digital, but Budget a missed opportunity to catalyse business investment in skills
At the recent Budget, The Chancellor set out his plans for a stronger economy for the British people, locating a “skills revolution” at the heart of government plans to drive regional productivity, level up opportunity and boost wages. Plans to increase places on Skills Bootcamps are welcome and offer potential to help businesses confront skills shortages more rapidly. We await further detail on how the Lifetime Skills Guarantee will be expanded to enable more adults to retrain. However, the budget was a missed opportunity to catalyse complementary business investment in skills and give providers the stable and simple funding they need to cement opportunities for people of all ages. The omission of Skills Accelerator funding also raises questions over how colleges will be resourced to deliver on business demand identified through Local Skills I
