Role summary
The CBI has a strong track record and reputation in gathering insight through surveys from a wide range of businesses. Our surveys play a key role in monitoring the economy, and helping policymakers and business leaders develop strategy and make better decisions. The data that we gather are highly regarded and widely used by government, academics and businesses as well as the CBI to track performance, prioritise work and drive change. We believe that our survey administrative support capability is a vital part to the delivery of our strategic priorities.
The Survey Assistant role within the Economic Surveys and Data Team, which is part of the broader Economic Intelligence Team, is an integral position and an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the CBI. This role is ideal for a candidate who would like to start and develop their career in the survey, economics or policy space. You will have the opportunity to work across various projects which form the core of the CBI’s work to help the government, stakeholders and clients make critical economic decisions.
The Economic Surveys and Data team is responsible for the delivery of a wide portfolio of business surveys, including economic and policy surveys (some of which attract sponsorship) as well as client surveys for CBI Economics, a CBI venture.
CBI Economics is a consultancy division that offers economic analysis, impact assessments, business surveys, and a range of other products including economic briefings to our clients. It supports businesses to build their economic evidence base on specific areas of interest. You will play supportive role in the delivery and processing of these CBI Economics surveys reporting to the Economic Surveys and Data Manager.
This role is a pay Band 6. Salary £25,000.
Key responsibilities
- Support the Economic Surveys & Data team in the delivery of a wide portfolio of survey work, such as:
- Building surveys and marketing campaigns - Using SurveyMonkey and the CBI’s marketing system (Spotler) to create surveys and distribution lists.
- Unsubscribes management: Handle any unsubscribe requests efficiently to ensure our survey contact lists are up to date.
- Recruitment: Assist in thesurvey recruitment process, ensuring a robust and representative sample.
- Sample management: Maintain and update the active sample list on Spotler (The CBI’s marketing system), identifying undeliverable contacts and replacing them through our contacts lists or internet research.
- Research on low responses: Investigate and analyse low response rates, providing insights and recommendations to improve participation.
- Support the CBI Economics team in delivering bespoke commercial surveys to clients.
- Collaboration with the CBI’s policy unit in delivering survey project work.
- Support the broad work of the Economic Surveys and Data team through ad-hoc requests.
Knowledge and experience

- Basic understanding of survey creation and data management.
- Analytical skills with the ability to identify trends and insights.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail and strong data quality assurance skills.
- Willingness to learn new survey skills and processes.
- Good problem-solving skills and an ability to work at pace.
Desirable
- Experience with survey tools such as SurveyMonkey or PowerBI.
- Knowledge of database administration.
- An interest in researching new survey recruitment techniques.
- Understanding of and interest in economics, business, and current affairs.
- Proficiency in statistical software such as R or Python.
