  • Service sector

Sentiment deteriorated in the three months to February with business volumes in the service sector as a whole falling sharply, driven by the steepest drop in activity among business and professional services firms in nearly six years. Our insights on consumer, business and professional services are powered by the CBI Economics Service Sector Survey.

  • Manufacturing

Manufacturing output continued to grow at an above-average pace in the three months to January. However, total orders were flat, with manufacturers reporting heightened concerns about overseas political and economic conditions as a constraint on export orders. Our insights on manufacturing are powered by the CBI Economics Industrial Trends Survey.

  • Financial Services

A number of financial services firms are citing that Brexit concerns are impacting their pipeline of work. One firm stated that Q4 2018 was “brutal for markets”. Many firms are stating that skills shortages are high in the sector, which is pushing up wages. Our insights on financial services are powered by the CBI Economics Financial Services Survey with PWC.

  • Retail, wholesale and motor trades

Q1 results show that retail sales stood still in February, while underlying conditions remain challenging. Wholesalers reported a slowdown in sales volumes growth, while motor traders saw an above average increase. Our insights on retail, wholesale and motor trades are powered by the CBI Economics Distributive Trades Survey.
